Merry Bay King
15.3hh 20yo Chestnut Thoroughbred Stallion
Dirt: Great Turf: Great Distance: 7-14 Furlongs
King was an unruly two year old, and he still is unruly today. He likes to flare up as to show off to the mares and to the many guests he receives, when Amber's not there to shoo them away. King's favorite thing in life is just living, to run along the fence line and whinny as evening meal is brought to his stall. He loves racing as well, as he had lots of admirers then. The one time King can be nasty is when he's being outshone, when his light is dimmed and eventually diminished completely. Then he's the devil, and he'll get that light back in anyway possible. What we love about King is his will to win at anything, and his open-mindedness. He accepted his new career of eventing with an impatient flick of the tail, and he enjoys roaring across the cross country course. The one thing he doesn't like about eventing is dressage. From when he used to do steeplechasing he knows how to jump, and it was amusing for him, but dressage is just dancing slowly on the flat, and he wants to go fast. Luckily he still responds, but after a dressage tournament he throws huge fits.
What is there to say about King that hasn't already been said on the racetrack? Merry Bay King is nothing short of a legend. When he raced everybody watched. One of the things that just made him a champion in the hearts of GHF members is that they watched him ascend to stardom alongside his rival, True Enough. They watched him win his way into the then-legendary title of grade one. They saw him win the big races, they saw him revolutionize what it means to fly solo on the track. King was an arrogant, unruly, disobedient two year old. His first season was the worst ever, and he only made it up to grade four by the end of it. When it came to his three year old season he shot it off with a bang by racing the GHF Triple Crown and the Icelandic Cup, his performance was still disappointing. It wasn't until his four year old season that it happened. King met True Enough, and the two started such a rivalry that the entire site took part in watching them battle it out. True climbed ahead, but then King caught up with him - and bounded straight past. He won the Cox Plate against True Enough and Bank On Silver, the gray mare owned by Green Horse Stables that romped the grade one races. In the Melbourne it was True that won, with King in a dead heat with Definite Glory, and Bank On Silver in a dead heat third with FS Waylay Attack. Then came his five year old season, and Bank On Silver left the track, to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. I was offered by Sarah to let King sire the legendary mare's first foal, but I refused, sticking to my habit of never breeding racehorses while they were still racing. Thus, True Enough sired the foals, for Silver had twin fillies called Euphoria and Lusitania. We can't say what happened, but then King really started to reign over the racetrack. With Silver gone the way was clear. He won his way through the big races and then, at the end of the year, the Breeder's Cup. King was, of course, entered in the Breeder's Cup Turf, and we waited with nervous twitches for MD to pass judgement on which of the twelve horses entered should win - and King won it. True, of course, was only a nose behind in second. After the astounding victory King won the Unicorn Horn Classic and then retired. He became Horse of the Year and was inducted into the GHF Hall of Fame with twenty-three yes votes and zero no votes! King is a legend, and he as well as Bank On Silver and True Enough will be remembered in GHF, always.
